Lodge Crawfurdsburn Greenock No. 1121 Sponsored Walk 2018
Brothers Malcolm A Sinclair, John Laird, Iain D Hair, Samuel L Hunter and Donald J McRae met at the Old Largs Road in Greenock early in the morning of Saturday 2nd June to start the Lodge’s sponsored walk to Largs in support of the funds for Callum McMichael’s treatment.
The weather was pleasant and warm, similar to the many mornings we have had during the summer recess. Indications were that the temperature would be rising as the hours passed during the walk of some 13 miles. However, why would we complain, given the cause we were supporting and given that it was Inverclyde, it is also a bonus when we don’t have to face horizontal rain – even in summer!
You would have thought that walking the Old Largs Road would be the safer route to complete a sponsored walk compared to completing it on the coastal road. However, at times it appeared large numbers of Inverclyde and North Ayrshire residents were in training for the Tour de France, given the number of times we had to move into the side of the road to let cyclists past, not to mention the numerous cars that were using the route.
It took some 4 hours to complete the walk, including a stop for some sustenance. The stop overlooked a reservoir nearer the Largs end. If you every complete this walk with Sammy Hunter you’ll be told it is just round the corner, which is technically true, but he is never referring to the corner that you are approaching when you ask the question “Where is this reservoir”.
The walk was a success and over £1,000 was raised and as can be seen from one of the photos the walkers enjoyed a pint or two when we reached Largs.
